Language Exchange Groups in Belo Horizonte: Practice Portuguese and More

Living in Belo Horizonte or just passing through, and feeling like your Portuguese is missing the most important part: real conversation, no script and no fear of making mistakes? Good news: the language exchange in Belo Horizonte scene is alive, and it's free. If you've been wondering where to practice languages in Belo Horizonte, there are several conversation groups in Belo Horizonte where you can practice Portuguese in Belo Horizonte with us locals while we practice English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Esperanto and even Libras, our Brazilian Sign Language.

These language meetups in Belo Horizonte work like a language exchange bar in BH: each group gets together at a bar, café or restaurant, you only pay for what you order, and you spend the afternoon (or evening) chatting. Before paying for a pricey course, give this format a try. It complements any class and speeds up fluency like nothing else.

Below I rounded up every language exchange in BH, from Clube Poliglota BH to English Meeting BH, with each group's Instagram, the yearly cultural events and UAI Línguas BH, the huge meetup that brings every language together in one place. Just pick your language and show up.

Why practicing a language in a group makes all the difference

Learning vocabulary on an app helps, but fluency happens in spontaneous conversation. Here's what these meetups give you that a classroom can't:

  • Real conversation: you practice everyday situations, with accents and slang no textbook teaches.
  • You lose the fear of making mistakes: the vibe is relaxed and everyone is there to learn. Mistakes are part of the game.
  • Contact with native speakers: you'll find plenty of us Brazilians plus foreigners who live in BH, which makes the experience so much richer.
  • Networking and friendships: it's cultural exchange, making friends and opening professional doors.
  • It's free: most meetups cost nothing. You only pay for what you order at the bar or restaurant.
  • Consistency: weekly or biweekly meetups build the routine that learning needs.

Ice breaker questions

Going alone and don't know anyone? No problem. That's the number one question from people who have never been, and the answer is simple: you're more than welcome. Organizers are used to newcomers and make a point of introducing you to the group and bringing you into the circle. Within minutes you'll be chatting with someone. Going alone is actually the best way to meet new people.

Use my list of ice breaker questions in Portuguese, it will definitely help at the start.

Once the ice is broken, the challenge is keeping the conversation going. When the chat gets stuck on "where are you from?", bring up one of the everyday moral and ethical dilemmas I put together: they spark opinions, disagreement and lots of conversation in any language.

English Meeting: one of the English conversation groups in BH.

The dean of the groups: it has been running in BH since 2013 and is the meetup that gave rise to this whole network. It happens every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. at Porks Casarão, in the Centro-Sul area. Regulars say their fluency improved naturally just by showing up consistently, and that this is where you pick up the variations and slang no course teaches. Perfect if you want to practice English in a laid-back setting after work, and a great place to meet Brazilians who will happily switch to Portuguese with you.

And if you speak Spanish and plan to use the meetup to practice Portuguese with us, read the 29 differences between Spanish and Portuguese first. It's the fastest shortcut to avoid slipping into portunhol (that Spanish and Portuguese mix) in your very first conversation.

Yearly event: the Festival Sons & Sabores Latinos, at Praça da Assembleia, dives into Hispanic culture with rhythms like salsa, cumbia and reggaeton, plus food from our neighboring countries. A Latin immersion without leaving the city.

Every so often, all these groups get together in one place at UAI Línguas, a mega meetup that brings English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Esperanto and friends together in a single afternoon. Past editions have gathered more than 300 people in a totally relaxed atmosphere, with lots of foreigners in the mix. It's the perfect chance to "taste" several languages at once and meet all the organizers.

And the name isn't random: "uai" is the most mineiro interjection there is, the one we use to show surprise, doubt, or just to add emphasis in the middle of a sentence. Want to find out why the way people talk in BH catches so much attention from outsiders? Take a look at my post on the Brazilian accent.

Are you a foreigner who wants to practice your Portuguese? UAI Línguas is for you too: with so many people in one place, there's no shortage of Brazilians happy to chat. So you don't feel lost in the group, read the typical Brazilian phrases foreigners don't understand and my post on interjections in Portuguese, those "vish", "eita" and "aff" we say all the time.
