4 Tricks to Loosen Up and Start Speaking Portuguese

After learning the 6 tactics to better understand Portuguese in the first stage, many people ask me the same question: “Okay, but how do I actually start speaking?”

This is the second stage of the process.

After listening, listening, and listening some more, it is time to speak.

At this point, the goal is simple: turn your passive vocabulary into active vocabulary.

But for that to happen, you needer’s need to put the language into practice. There is no point in learning if you never use what you have learned.

So let’s look at 4 practical tricks to start speaking Portuguese faster.

1. Repeat Out Loud

Every time you hear something in Portuguese, a TikTok, a song, a series, or even my videos on Youtube, try to repeat it out loud.

It can be just one word, but a full phrase is even better. Repeat whatever catches your attention.

Focus on expressions you might actually use in real life, whether on a trip to Brazil, in daily conversations, or at work if that is your goal.

Try to repeat it immediately after hearing it, before your memory works against you.

2. Use Online Tools That Help With Pronunciation

If you have written something down or read a text in Portuguese, use tools that help you hear how it is pronounced, such as Forvo.

Always look for phrases, not isolated words. What really matters is how words connect to each other.

That is something most people are never taught, and that is where much of the difficulty comes from.

After listening, repeat the phrase out loud.

3. Find Places to Speak Portuguese

What is the point of learning a language if you never use it?

Do you really think that one day, when you suddenly need to speak, you will be able to do it if you have never practiced before?

I know it can feel embarrassing at first, but there are places where you will not be judged, and you do not have to spend any money.

If shyness is holding you back, start online. Social media is a great place to begin.

If you want to take it a step further, look for language exchange groups.

Feeling more confident?

One of the best things you can do is host travelers in your home through Couchsurfing.

Do not just offer accommodation and disappear. Use the opportunity to chat, ask questions, and have informal conversations with a native speaker.

Another great option is AIESEC. In this case, you host young Portuguese-speaking volunteers who usually come to work or study, not just travel like on Couchsurfing.

I have used Couchsurfing myself, and it was a great experience.

4. Don’t Waste Your Time Conjugating Verbs

Verb conjugation in Portuguese can be overwhelming. There are many tenses, and it is easy to get stuck there.

At this stage, focus more on understanding and speaking. You will have plenty of time to improve grammar later.

What really helps is learning a few key conjugations of the most common irregular verbs in Portuguese. I recommend starting with those as soon as possible.
